Any movie maker who sets out to tell the story of his people, to pit good against evil and cowboy against hired gun, to mix in local myths and Christian symolism, to match reality with fantasy, to inveigh against the evils of capitalismm to tell s story of tortured love - and, what's more, do it all as a musical - had better bring in a masterpiece. Sérgio Ricardo, composer and movie maker, set out to do all of these things in a film called "The Night of the Scarecrow", shown last weekend at the 12th New York Film Festival. It is not a masterpiece.
